Presentation

No matter the type of artist you are, your presentation is your "first impression." Whether you're presenting to a room full of classmates, a gallery full of industry professionals and potential buyers, or a board room full of colleagues, your portfolio is your work's book cover. Every professional, student, or aesthetic aficionado deserves a portfolio that represents not only their personality, but the work they labored on. Which is where we come along.

We value you and your work, just as much as you do. Successful presentation means a successful impression. Which is why we offer four types of presentation pieces to help you properly equip for whatever endeavor, meeting, project you might be working on..

The Print Folio Case

Slim, sleek, and contemporary way to store your work. Featuring a matte-linen finish, the black exterior compliments any presentation. FORMAT Print Folio's also feature magnetic closures...unlike other Folio's in the market place which feature velcro. This allows us to maintain a minimal look, while still remaining functional and keeping your prized possessions safe and secure. Currently available in 5 different sizes.

The Solander Museum Case

The Solander Museum Case is one of the most classic styles of preservation (we suggest you read our blog post on Daniel Charles Solander, himself). This case has been used for decades by museums and archival institutions. Available in 7 sizes options, the FORMAT Solander Museum Case features an all black, acrylic-coated fabric exterior paper, basswood sides & spine construction, and metal latches.

The Portfolio Case

Intended for both long term storage and presentation, for both matted & un-matted prints. The Portfolio Case is our most simplified portfolio option, with no metal or magnetic closures. Commonly used by professionals for many years, this traditional design has remained unchanged, rigid, air-tight, and dust free. Comes in black exterior, but with the option of a white or black interior, as well as over 15 size options.

Portfolio Box

Equipped with D-Rings like any photo album, the Portfolio Box fully encloses eliminating contamination on the contents inside. It helps that the case is geometric, allowing for it to be easily stored & stacked on any shelf. Available in 2 different D-Ring sizes, this portfolio is wrapped in a black buckram texture, acyrlic-coated fiber reinforced paper, which means it can be easily wiped down from dust and finger prints.

The Format Print Folio Case is perfect for artists in need of a stylish and practical portfolio case, capable of storing photographs, sketches, matted prints, magazines, books, and more. Much like all of our products, the Print Folio Cases are designed to protect your work from the inside out (just check out our Preservation post). Featuring .100 thick acid free, lignin free, & PH neutral binder boards, as well as acrylic coated exterior paper. The interior folding flap has magnets to secure closure, thus reducing exposure to light, dust, and dirt. We also decided to keep the magnetic closure hidden to maintain a sleek and minimal design.

NativeArchival.com currently offers the Format Print Folio Case in five different sizes, and like all of our products, is made and resourced in the United States.

Preservation

Bottom line: photographs are sensitive. Whether you spent countless hours developing the film and prints, or endless minutes editing them on photoshop, it's important that after your work is printed, it's also protected. There are numerous factors that go into what may damage your prized possessions; heat, humidity, and pollution to name a few.

Although, we may not go in-depth about what the temperature of your room should be based on how you printed your photo, we will give you the down-low on how your portfolios & archival storage should measure-up.

Storage should be the physical barrier between your photographs/art, and any potential problems it may encounter that may result in scratches, smears, etc. Believe it or not, most damage that occurs to a photograph in it's lifetime happens when improper storage is utilized.

Enclosures, or portfolios, should include (but are not limited to) the following features:

  1. Be acid-free
  2. Be lignin-free

Luckily, our portfolios not only feature the above points, as well as include (but are not limited to) the additional following features:

  1. The use of PH neutral paper & binder boards
  2. Reinforced spine hinges for durability
  3. Heavy exterior coating for an added layer of protection
  4. Metal reinforced corners

so·lan·der
səˈlandər/Submit
noun
a protective box made in the form of a book, for holding such items as botanical specimens, maps, and color plates.

Daniel Charles Solander, a renowned Swedish botanist & an apostle of Carl Linnaeus (Swedish botanist, zoologist, and physician), traveled with Captain Cook on his first voyage to the Pacific Ocean aboard the 'Endeavour,' alongside Joseph Banks, a fellow botanist. During that time, Solander helped to make an important collection of Australian plants, as well as a manuscript describing all the species collected on his voyage. This sparked his creation of a "book-form box," which was to hold his manuscripts, as well as to preserve botanical specimens he collected.

Today, the 'Solander Case' is commonly used by museums, libraries, and professionals to store valuable collections (paintings, drawings, materials, and manuscripts). FORMAT box makers make these cases by hand, maintaining their classic shape and purpose, with mindful updates to the design.

Currently, FORMAT makes nine different sized Solander Museum Cases. The case features a clamshell lid, as well as a book-cloth hinge spine that allows the museum case to open 180 degrees on any flat surface- which makes it incredibly easy to sort through your photos by transferring them from side to side. Nickel plated clasps are added to these handmade wooden structures with rivets to not only give it a modern design, but to ensure that collections are safe from light & dust (or anything else, for that matter).

Like all of our products on Nativearchival.com, the Solander Museum Case is made with materials sourced from U.S. based suppliers- from the basswood, interior white lignin-free lining in buffered ph neutral paper, exterior hard case, exterior black covering materials, and even the adhesives used to apply it, all have an origin based in the United States.
